The monastic movement development improved the definition of the Liturgy of the Hours. In the High Middle Ages monk’s life was alternated between prayer and work and provided for eight daily moment of prayer: Matins (before dawn); Lauds (after dawn); Prime (at 6 a.m.); Terce (at 9 a.m.); Sext (at 12 a.m.); None (at 3 p.m.); Vespers (at 5 p.m.) and Compline (at 8 p.m.). In theese Hours monks sang Psalms, hymns, responsories (chants with a verse by the singer and a response by the choir). Similarly, developed different liturgical periods (Advent, Christmas, Lent, Easter, Ascension, Pentecost) and the liturgical chants for Mass. That comprehended the Proper (Introit, Gradual, Alleluia, Tract, Offertory, Communion), varying upon the liturgical period, and the Ordinary (Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, Agnus Dei), with same texts during the year.
